My vote goes for M.A.S.H. - unsurpassed writing, great characters, unafraid to tackle issues... TV at its best.

I don't mean to stretch this thread anymore than need be: That's my disclaimer. But...

Yes, UncleJohn52, "M.A.S.H." stands right next to "All in the Family" as do perhaps a dozen others. Using the Film School 101 criteria (originality, complexity, coherence, and intensity of effect), I would argue that both shows (AITF and MASH) were definitively groundbreaking. I would even include most of the "X-Files" episodes.

IMO (and I've been teaching TV and Video Analysis every semester for 15 years), Jean Stapelton's/Norman Lear's "Edith" was the One from which all others were derived.
